Formatting Word Documents

I had to use multiple sites to figure all of this out, so since I want to write this to future me, I thought I'd share with you, too, in case you need it.

Book Formatting in Word: Page Count Footers and Author/Title Alternating Headers

(you can flip header footer if you like, or you can alternate book title/chapter title, or whatever you need)

Word header alternating: Double click header space. Under Header & Footer.

To start this with the first chapter instead of the beginning of the document:

Go to first chapter, go to section before, hit delete until it removes the line break. Go to Layout > Breaks > Next Page (this restores the line break, but tells the document it is a new section).

Double click header space. Double click "Link to Previous" (to unlink--it will stop being highlighted).

Counting: Insert > Page Number > Bottom of Page.

To start this on a different page from the beginning: Create a new section and unlink as before. Select all inside header and footer separately on both even and odd pages in order to format everything.

I hope this helps someone!
